Impressed Supervisor: State Polytechnic of Bangka Belitung Software Engineering Student Develops AI App to Detect Expired Products

Vanessa Angelika, a TRPL student at the State Polytechnic of Bangka Belitung (Polman Negeri Babel), presented and demonstrated the functionality of the application developed for her Final Project before the examining and supervising lecturers as part of the assessment process during the Final Project defense.

Another technological innovation benefiting the community has emerged from students of the Software Engineering Technology (TRPL) program at the Bangka Belitung State Manufacturing Polytechnic. This innovation was presented on the final day of the Final Project defense sessions, held at the Joint Lecture Building on Friday (July 17, 2026).

One student successfully presented a final project titled "Computer Vision-Based Android Application for Detecting Expiration Dates on Packaged Food Products Using YOLOv11 and On-Device ML Kit."

The project garnered attention by offering a practical solution to food safety issues frequently faced by the public. The presentation session lasted approximately two hours.

The student outlined the research background, the system development process, and the application's implementation results before the examining lecturers, M. Hizbul Wathan, M.Kom., and Rahmat Hidayat, M.Kom.

In an interview, Riki Afriansyah, M.T., commented on the student's choice of topic, noting that food safety is a crucial aspect of maintaining public health. "Many people—including homemakers who manage family consumption—often lack diligence in checking expiration dates before purchasing or consuming products," he stated.

Furthermore, consuming products past their expiration date poses potential health risks, such as food poisoning and digestive issues.

"Manual checks for expiration dates come with several challenges, including small print sizes, poor print quality, and the inconsistent placement of information across different products," he added.

Consumers often overlook the expiration dates of products stored at home, leading them to use items past their safe consumption limit; therefore, a system is needed that can not only automatically read expiration date information but also help users keep track of product shelf life," he explained.

Meanwhile, advancements in artificial intelligence—specifically Computer Vision—offer a way to address this issue through automated detection using mobile device cameras; the students developed an application capable of locating expiration date information using YOLOv11.

"The application can recognize date text using ML Kit On-Device, automatically save product information, and send reminder notifications to users when a product is nearing or has passed its expiration date," he added.

"Ultimately, the application demonstrated by the students during this final project presentation is expected to help the public easily, quickly, and accurately monitor the shelf life of packaged food products. This aims to raise awareness regarding food safety, reduce the risk of consuming expired products, and support a healthier, safer lifestyle through an Android-based automated reminder system," Riki concluded.
