Learning About Internet Network Infrastructure, TRJK Students from Polman Negeri Babel Visit Moratelindo
To strengthen students' practical competencies and align vocational education with the needs of industrial firms, the Computer Network Engineering Technology (TRJK) study program at the Bangka Belitung State Manufacturing Polytechnic (Polman Babel) conducted a company visit to PT. Moratelindo Pangkal Pinang on Friday (October 23, 2026). The visit provided students with the opportunity to observe firsthand the physical layer infrastructure operations typical of an Internet Service Provider (ISP).
The visit was led by the Head of the Applied Bachelor’s Program in Computer Network Engineering Technology, Muhammad Iqbal, M.Eng., accompanied by Firdaus, S.Kom., M.Kom.—the lecturer for the "Fundamentals of Computer Networks" course—and attended by approximately 30 students.
When reached for further comment on Monday (October 26, 2026), Muhammad Iqbal, M.Eng., explained that the visit, which ran from 08:30 to 16:00 WIB, featured a packed and comprehensive agenda. Upon arrival, students received a technical briefing from PT. Moratelindo Pangkal Pinang instructors regarding fiber optic installation and testing equipment, including fiber cleavers, fusion splicers, OTDRs, and VFLs.
Iqbal noted that the visit serves as a crucial step in the "link and match" initiative between vocational education at Polman Babel and real-world industry practices, ensuring that TRJK students gain direct exposure to the latest infrastructure technologies.
" By gaining empirical insights from the operations at Moratelindo Pangkal Pinang, we aim to foster student competencies that are adaptive, grounded in a strong engineering mindset, and prepare them for careers in the computer networking sector," he explained.

Furthermore, the students were guided through the color-coding architecture of fiber optic cables—following the TIA-598 standard—and learned to identify various connector interfaces (SC, LC, FC) along with their respective polishing geometries (UPC and APC). They also observed the end-to-end network termination process, tracing the path from outdoor backbone cables into central infrastructure, such as SFP modules housed in server racks," he concluded.
From an academic perspective, Firdaus, S.Kom., M.Kom.—the lecturer for the fundamental computer networking course—noted that the site visit served as a vital bridge for the students' academic understanding. "Concepts they studied in the classroom—such as the OSI model and how light propagates through optical transmission media at Layer 1—were comprehensively validated today," he added.
Moreover, in terms of practical experience, the students gained a crucial psychomotor foundation, which will be essential when they move on to assembling and configuring switching hardware (Layer 2) in the campus laboratory," he explained.
The visit concluded with an interactive discussion session, during which students had the opportunity to engage in in-depth Q&A with network practitioners from Moratelindo, covering topics such as troubleshooting and Quality of Service (QoS) standards in real-world field environments.
It is a small step with a significant impact. Through this, the Applied Bachelor’s program in Telecommunication and Computer Network Engineering (TRJK) at Polman Babel aims to produce network engineers who are not only theoretically proficient but also practically robust and ready for the demands of the professional workplace," Firdaus asserted.
