Utilizing Compost to Rehabilitate Post-Mining Land: Polman Negeri Babel Develops
Efforts to restore and utilize post-tin-mining land continue to evolve through the application of eco-friendly technologies. Lecturers from the Bangka Belitung State Manufacturing Polytechnic have introduced a "Compost-Based Island Planting Technology" innovation as a rehabilitation strategy for post-tin-mining land at the Air Jangkang Reclamation Village (August 20, 2026).
This Community Partnership Program (PKM) is led by Priestiani, M.P., alongside team members Lesta, S.P., M.Si., and Laily Muharani, S.P., M.Si., involving students from the Precision Agriculture Study Program and the management of the Air Jangkang Reclamation Village.
When contacted on Wednesday (September 30, 2026), the team leader, Priestiani, M.P., explained that the implemented innovation was designed for post-mining land management. She noted that the initiative introduces a simple yet practical technology for land rehabilitation; the compost-based island planting concept allows the reclamation area to be utilized more optimally while serving as a space to implement sustainable agricultural technology innovations.
Priestiani added that the collaboration involving the higher education institution, students, and the Air Jangkang Reclamation Village management in implementing and developing this innovation creates opportunities for students to gain direct field experience.

Meanwhile, Andini, S.P., the supervisor for the management of the Air Jangkang Reclamation Village, noted that the application of technology is expected to support land restoration while also creating opportunities to utilize the reclaimed area in a more productive and sustainable manner.
“It is highly beneficial for fostering innovation and knowledge among the management team as they strive to maximize the potential of the reclaimed area,” she stated.
“Furthermore, students from the Precision Agriculture program can bridge their academic studies with fieldwork, gaining an understanding of land rehabilitation technologies, compost utilization, post-mining land management, and the use of local resources to support the area's sustainability,” she concluded.
"Looking ahead, the implementation of the compost-based 'Island Planting' technology innovation supports the development of the Air Jangkang Reclamation Village as a hub for learning and applying agricultural technology and post-mining land-use models that are productive and innovative, while remaining mindful of environmental considerations," he asserted.
